Metamorphosis is a term used for extinct
stages in the development from egg to adult
For example, an insect such as the butterfly
is active and wormlike (a caterpiller) in its
larval stage. In its next stage the insect is
surrounded by a covering known as the cacoon.
It is outwardly inactive but undergoes many
changes in internal organisation. Eventually
the insect emerges transformed into its adult
stage (a butterfly). Metamorphosis is
complete when there is no suggestion of the
adult in the larval stage. In incomplete
metamorphosis, the successive larval stages
resemble the adult, as in the GRASSHOPPER.
Many species change their habitat after
undergoing complete metamorphosis, an exaple
of this would be a toad, it lives in water as
a tadpole and on land as an adult.
